The examples of coaching styles below will be used in a flexible way depending on the situation that confronts the mentee and the coach.

DIRECTIVE
This style is best used when dealing with inexperienced and/or those mentees who are lacking in confidence. Using this style you TELL the individual what, how, why, when, where and by whom the task is to be done.

SUPPORTIVE
This approach is used to provide reassurance to the mentee by giving positive strokes and being a prop in order to build the individual's confidence further. The coach is still the main driving force. This can be used to provide support to individuals when they have had a number of setbacks in their development.

CONSULTATIVE
In this style the mentee is taking more ownership than in the previous two. The individual starts to identify own possible solutions to situations. Through this process the individual builds further confidence and self-motivation.

COUNSELLING
This approach is used for the more experienced and confident mentees. This is where the individual identifies the solutions themselves. The coach listens and provides feedback to the mentee eg probing and open questions. This style is aimed at getting the individual to take as much ownership of his/her own development as possible.
