CHECKLIST FOR PROVIDING EFFECTIVE MENTORING

Check your Mentoring skills.
Ensure that there is commitment from all parties eg mentor, mentee, line manager and organisation
Build a working relationship to help gain mutual trust between mentor and mentee
Provide time and effort to the process
Be clear and agree the purpose of the mentoring process with the mentee
Negotiate a learning contract with the mentee so that both the mentor and mentee know what is expected from each other
Plan and prepare the overall programme and each session beforehand
Provide relevant support and resources for the mentee to achieve eg training
Monitor and review previous targets set
Observe and assess performance of the mentee
Provide feedback for the training techniques process
Question and actively listen
Provide support and guidance when needed
Provide alternative options, when appropriate
Allow mentee to choose from the various options training programs
Mutually agree action plan
Evaluate the process in relation to mentee, overall programme and own performance
