Objectives need to be precise and well constructed otherwise they will be vague statements with limited benefits to the mentor and the mentee. Poor objectives will have a detrimental effect on the progress of the mentee and could also damage the relationship between the mentor and the mentee.

An objective must have these three parts to make it effective
A TASK
Something which must be achieved and where improvements can be observed
A MEASURE of performance
Providing a way of identifying whether the target has been achieved or not
A PERIMETER
Helps to clarify a boundary in which the objective is to be observed/undertaken
