Objectives are not always achieved for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is due to external factors outside of your control or an unforeseen issue. Other times, however, it is because there has been poor handling of the objective setting process.

Below are a number of situations highlighting the effects of poor objective setting. For each situation identify the most probable cause:

Situation 1  

You have recently joined your present organisation and are being mentored but you don't know what you should be achieving and you feel that you have no direction.

What might be the cause of this ?

 
Situation 2  

Although you have set objectives with your mentor you find it difficult to measure how far you have progressed or even if you have achieved your goal.

What might be the cause of this ?

Situation 3  

You feel that you are not part of the mentoring process as your mentor sets you goals that you feel are wrong for your job role and also your own self development.

What might be the cause of this ?

Situation 4  

At the outset of commencing the mentoring programme your mentor discussed and completed an action plan with you. That was the last time you saw the document. You feel your progress has been very slow and you feel that you are floundering. Whenever you ask for a copy of the document or have enquired how you are progressing against the goals set, he/she has indicated that it is not important at that point.

What might be the cause of this ?

Situation 5  

Your meetings with your mentor don't seem to provide you with enthusiasm and you feel totally de-motivated about the whole process. The negative aspects seem to be the main focus of your mentor.
